Ukrzaliznytsia in January increases grain handling by 20%

Ukrainian railways in January 2014 increased grain transportation by 19.8% compared to January 2013, to 2.8 million tonnes.

In January the railways daily loaded 1,417 cars with grain.

Prydniprovska Railways over-fulfilled the plan of loading by 18.8%, Donetsk Railways - by 27.6%, Pivdenna Railways - 4%, and Pivdenno-Zakhidna Railways - 8.7%.

The burden reduced on holidays and weekends due to a lack of orders from grain traders and other cargo owners.

Now the railroads are expecting excessive demand for grain cars and requests to meet customers' requirements as soon as possible. However, due to the limited capacity of ports and elevators for loading and unloading, such an approach significantly complicates the logistics of transportation. Weather conditions also affected the work of ports in January.

As reported, the working fleet of freight cars daily involved in grain transportation at the beginning of the year amounted to 13,180 grain wagons, 5,155 of which loaded and 8,025 empty cars. This amount is sufficient for handling 40 million tonnes of grain a year.
